Freight Market To Grow Substantially According to Boeing Forecast

The world’s air cargo fleet will take on 743 brand new freighters and 1,751 freighters converted from passenger airplanes, worth a total of $180 billion, over the next 20 years, according to a forecast Boeing released Tuesday.

Boeing expects large wide-body jets to account for 33 percent of the world’s air freighters in 2029, up from 27 percent in 2009. And, while Boeing predicts the narrow-body share of the fleet to grow from 37 to 40 percent, it expects nearly all of these will be conversions from passenger or passenger-freight combination aircraft.

Interestingly, Boeing offers two freighters that meet its definition of large — the 777 and 747-8 — while Airbus has none. In fact, the Boeing expects the medium freighter segment, including Airbus’ A330 freighter, to shrink from 36 percent of the fleet to 27 percent.
