Pre-assembly of ribs, upper and lower covers and fixed leading and trailing edges already has taken place. These components will be moved into the main assembly jigs for full wing box integration.

Most of the A350 XWB wing is made of carbon composite, including the upper and lower wing covers, stringers, front and rear spars.

Airbus notes that the advanced structural design and superior wing aerodynamics are significant contributors to the aircraft’s 25% fuel-saving performance.

The A350 XWB is scheduled to enter into service in 2014.

Airbus partner and aerospace structures company Aerolia has delivered the first A350 XWB nose section to Airbus’ facility in St. Nazaire, France.

The A350 XWB nose section comprises three main sub-assemblies: the cockpit plus upper and lower forward fuselage parts, which incorporate door one and the nose landing gear bay. The A350 XWB nose section is made of 40% composites, 55% aluminum/aluminum-lithium and 5% titanium. Once assembled and equipped, the nose section will be joined to the forward fuselage to form the A350 XWB front fuselage, Airbus said.

Airbus has decided to push back by two years the entry into service of two future versions of its long-range A350-900 XWB, a wide-bodied aircraft that it plans to start delivering to customer airlines in late 2015, according to a report to be published in Friday’s edition of La Tribune.

Citing sources, the report says Airbus now plans first deliveries of the smaller A350-800 and the stretched A350-1000 in 2016 and 2017, respectively, instead of 2014 and 2015 as previously planned, and that an announcement will be made during the Paris Air Show that starts June 20.

La Tribune says Airbus will use the extra time to improve the A350-800 in line with customer feedback. For the A350-1000, and at the request of Gulf airline customers, Rolls-Royce is developing a more powerful engine that will extend the plane’s range by 400 nautical miles and allow it to carry heavier cargo loads and compete head-on with Boeing’s (BA) long-range 777-300.

The first A350 XWB nose landing gear produced by Liebherr Aerospace has been successfully installed in the A350 XWB landing gear systems test facility in Filton in the UK.

In the coming weeks, the main landing gear supplied by Messier-Dowty will be installed and preliminary testing of all three landing gear legs will start. Full integration testing will begin with the entry into service of the facility towards the end of 2011. These tests are carried out to demonstrate reliability and maturity in addition to providing evidence for certification, especially with regards to the extension-retraction, braking and steering systems.

The test facility, called ‘landing gear zero’, is part of a series of integration test benches specifically developed to test the A350 XWB systems in order to ensure that the aircraft meets the highest standards of in-service reliability from day one.
