The first IAG Cargo 747-8 freighter, painted in British Airways World Cargo livery, as it emerges from the paint hangar at Boeing’s Everett site in Washington.

IAG Cargo, through British Airways World Cargo, will take delivery of the first of three 747-8 freighters late October. These aircraft will be operated for British Airways World Cargo under a contract with Global Supply Systems, a 49 per cent UK affiliate of Atlas Air, owner of the aircraft. They will replace the current fleet of 747-400 freighters in operation.

Boeing took six days to paint the new 747-8 freighter – 240 gallons of mixed paint and primer were used by 50 employees working in shift rotation.

Boeing has received ICAO “heavy” designation for its 747-8, which will be able to operate at the same separation distances as the 747-400

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has granted Boeing the use of the heavy designation for its 747-8, continuing the wake separation rules established for the smaller 747-400.

Boeing said ICAO has sent a letter to its member nations that the 747-8 should maintain a 9.9km (5nm) separation distance from small aircraft weighing less than 19t (41,000lbs) and those in the large category below 136t (300,000lbs). For aircraft above 136t, separation distances have been reduced to 7.4km (4nm).

By comparison, Airbus’sA380, the only commercial aircraft to operate with the “super” designation requires an 11.1km (6nm) spacing ahead of heavy aircraft, a 13km (7nm) ahead of larger aircraft and 14.8km (8nm) ahead of small aircraft.

Smoke in the cabin of ZA002, Boeing’s second 787 flight test aircraft prompted an evacuation of the 30-plus test personnel on board. The test aircraft was enroute to Harlingen, Texas on long range trials when smoke was seen in the main cabin.

The ZA002 touched down in Laredo after a fire broke out in the aft electronics equipment bay causing the flight deck primary flight displays and auto throttle to fail.

Boeing says ZA002 landed safely in Laredo, Texas and the crew evacuated the airplane safely. Boeing says ZA002 is on the ground in Laredo, Texas with its evacuation slides deployed.

Boeing has completed the power on sequence for the new 747-8 Intercontinental. This milestone enables the program to begin functional tests on the airplane.

Boeing has completed the power on sequence for the new 747-8 Intercontinental. This milestone enables the program to begin functional tests on the airplane.

Power on is a complex series of tasks that methodically energize and activate the airplane’s systems. In this critical stage of the assembly process, the electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems are brought on line.

Mechanics connected the 747-8 to an external power cart to energize the flight-deck display and maintenance systems. The electricity coursing through the airplane’s 133 miles (214 km) of wire will be as high as 105 kilovoltampere (kVa).

The program also activated the airplane’s hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Pressurized to 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi), the hydraulics power the flight control surfaces, landing gear, brakes and steering systems. The 160 psi applied to the pneumatic system enables the airplane to operate the environmental control systems and the leading-edge flaps.
